Bring on the fat and DON'T hold the carbs

Recently, as I was ranting about how important it is to eat naturally, I was asked, "do you just eat salads all day?" Hmm...let me think, NO I DON'T EAT SALADS ALL DAY...DO I LOOK LIKE I EAT SALADS ALL DAY? I have enough fat to float. --Not that there's anything wrong with eating salads all day, I just prefer a carton of Double Rainbow or an entire cherry pie from Whole Foods, and there's not a cheesecake that I don't want to stick my fingers...I mean fork...in.

So listen, fat is not your enemy...neither are carbs, after all isn't it God that made dairy cows for butter and cheese? Isn't it God who made wheat to bake bread? Well, if God made it then I eat it. That's my rule....generally speaking.

With that said, a busy mom is well, busy. We have to make concessions from time to time and buy pre-made or processed foods....like Trader Joe's sauces, or Near East's couscous, or the pie from Whole Foods. Be smart about it. We live in a world with many options in regards to food, both good and plenty of bad. We are fortunate that with outrageous levels of obesity and food related diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease nutrition experts, like Dr. Weil, are finally getting people (and Doctors) to realize that we need to pay attention to what we shovel into our mouth. Fresh and whole foods are always best but we have options...not all packaged foods are created equal. Read labels.

Take some time and learn about bad fat/good fat and good sugars/bad sugars. While the evils of trans fats seem to be common knowledge nowadays, High Fructose Corn Syrup seems to fly by under the radar. This people is a toxic chemical and should not be consumed. and its in everything. READ LABELS. When my boys go grocery shopping with me they know its an event. We read everything....even if we read it last week, we scan it again just to make sure the manufacturer didn't change their ingredients. Joe, who's 4, will tell people (unsolicited) "That has high fructose corn syrup in it". Charlie, 3, typically follows with "gives you diabeebee's". You should see the rude and/or confused looks we get! HA!.

Dr. Weil has a world of information on health and nutrition on his website. I love him. http://www.drweil.com/.
