Smoothie Morning

Are your kids OCD about fruit? Mine our. They wont eat a banana with a brown spot or berries that are a little too ripe. They wont touch a pineapple...too spiky...or a mango...too slimy. What to do...make a smoothie.

I began making smoothies when my oldest was just under a year of age to curtail waste. I put all "too ripe to eat" fruit in zip locks and freeze. To this day I put all unwanted fruits in frezzer bags for smoothies. You can compensate in the winter months when a variety of fruit is limited, by purchasing frozen fruit.

When ready to make a "Mom-ba Juice" fill the blender to about 3/4 of the its capacity with frozen fruit --NO ICE-- and juice. I typically pour orange juice to the top of the fruit or just over and blend. Add more juice if you like a thinner smoothie.

The trick with the young ones is teaching them to drink from a straw!

NOTE: I pour any leftover smoothie into popsicle molds.

Hi Amanda: My latest trick in my smoothie is throwing in baby spinach. I also keep a bag of frozen spinach from Coscto in my freezer, and sometimes include that in my smoothies. So it changes the color a bit, but they're still super yummy! My kids have learned to accept foods in all colors, as I'm always adding colorful fruits and veggies in this and that (I got that idea from the Jessica Seinfeld cook book).
