Winter weight gain is not uncommon. There are many reasons why people gain weight in the cooler months, most common is we exercise less--less sun and more rain = less time out doors being physical. Also the selection of local fruits and vegetables is thinner and couple that with tasty, heavier meals that end in a slice (or two) of apple pie and you have a recipe for added lbs. I know why I gain weight in the fall/winter and it was everything to do with pie, pie and more pie. My sister, who is a personal trainer, recommends limiting fattening food to once a week. The rest of the week I eat fruit for dessert....or a bowl of Kashi 7 grains. It was extremely hard for me to give up a nightly scope of ice cream --but I did and I lost 15 lbs in three months---and that's all I gave up.
To avoid winter weight gain use common sense--exercise, avoid high sugar foods, avoid commercially prepared non-fat foods (which are high in artificial ingredients), avoid overly processed foods, eat lots of vegetables, fruits, proteins, grains and good fats, try to eat local and organic. And remember to read labels. It takes time and effort, but if you don't have good health than what do you have? Bringing only wholesome foods into your home will ensure healthy eating habits. (that's not to say we don't eat junk--surely we do--did I say I love pie? I just don't bring it home--we go out for dessert. If its not here I wont eat it--and I wont have to argue with the kids.)
In the months to come I will be talking a lot about healthy whole food recipes.
