I just got back from my weekly shopping which will get us through until this time next week. The kids and I got it all done today, it took 1.5 hours. Which is great considering we hit three places and a quick run into Big 5 for some soccer gear.
Our first stop was Trader Joe's, which is possibly the best combination of quality and cheap prices (Although I can find really good deals at Whole Foods too). I noticed that our favorite flour less sprouted grain bread is up to $2.99 from $2.29. We also bought our customary 1/2-gallon organic whole milk for $3.29. Not sure if that's up, but I will keep an eye on that as rising milk costs seem to get people talking. The nitrate free turkey bacon was $2.69 which I think is up $.20 from a few weeks ago. Everything else seemed to be the same. Even picked up some saffron for $5.99 and sweet Italian sausages (5 large per package) for $2.99, both seemed like a deal.
We then hit the Farmer's Wife local fruit and veg stand. They are bustling with local produce this time of year and are open 7 days a week. Their stuff is not necessarily organic but it's mostly local and that's fine for me.
Our last stop was Safeway for organic cilantro, leafy greens, and spinach. I know I could have gotten this at TJ's but I just can't bring myself to pay for pre-bagged produce--seems wasteful and twice the cost. Also, they didn't have these item's at the Farmers Wife. Plus, Safeway is on the way home so it's not out of the way.
Total Spending
Trader Joe's: $90.80
Farmer's Wife: $26.20
Safeway $8.89
Total: 125.89
We will be augmenting this with the fish Hubster and Hank caught, tomatoes and other veg from the garden.
