These are the ribs I dream of....my husband can cook up ribs like no other. He usually makes them every labor day. The picture above is from last year. They were so, so good.
This year was going to be no different...until politics ruined my day. That's right, California politicians have killed my day to eat ribs, and I'm ticked off.
My husband works for our wonderful state legislature. Its a great job. He loves what he does, works for a great Senator, has a smart and capable staff, best of all the job is recession proof...for better or worse, we will always have politicians.
The problem is they can't pass a flippin' state budget. It was supposed to be done in June. That means for more than two months our lovely politicians have piddled around. Now they decide they need to get this figured out which means my husband has to go to work.....today, on Labor Day....a day that he is supposed to be home cooking ribs for me.
There's always next year....Happy Labor Day!

That is such a bummer!
BLEH!
That does tend to ruin a perfectly good holiday!
Well, here's to hoping you found some small ways to enjoy it!!
If it's not super-secret, I'd love to get your husband's recipe.
My husband is trying to master ribs and they weren't bad but we're still experimenting.
Thanks
Janet
Hi Janet, From my husband:
The rub is top secret. The trick is to smoke it at a low temperature with hickory wood for at least 3 ours and fill a drip pan with water and red wine.
I also know he does not put the BBQ sauce until after they are done cooking.
I recommend the book
The Barbecue! Bible by Steven Raichlen. My husband developed his rub after reading this book cover to cover!
