Milling Grains and Making Bread

Yesterday I milled some rye and hard winter wheat, last night I made the dough, and today we ate the bread. It's really good. The recipe came from the book The Art of Simply Food by Alice Waters. It's a MUST HAVE book for any food lover or cook. (I got my signed copy as a gift from my most thoughtful friends Gina and Keith. Thank you!)

There is something nostalgic, maybe even spiritual, about making bread from scratch. When I knead the dough I feel connected to much simpler time when food was basic, real and a product of hard labor. I'm sure the pioneer women saw it as more of a chore than a deep connection with their ancestors, but whatever.

I think I would have done well in the Wild West....I can make bread, ride a horse, shoot a gun, sew, swear, and wrangle children....what more does a pioneer lady need?

I just discovered your blog. You crack me up. I know what it's like to wrangle children! hee hee.The information you post is wonderful. What kind of grain mill do you use? I make most of our bread and I want to start grinding my own grains but there are so many mills to choose from.
